When
four or more members of Open Circle have a commitment to an issue and
wish to address it within both the fellowship and the larger community,
they may form a social justice team.
Open Circle currently has two such active action groups. Follow the links for additional detail and contact information. - Eco-Food Group. This
group focuses on the interrelatedness of our food choices and a
whole host of social and environmental justice issues, such as
as the wages of field workers, the energy used to
transportfood,and mercury in our lakes
and fish from coal-burning emissions. The question,
"How, then, shall we eat?" is a
central one
and worthy of deep consideration worthy of deep consideration. Contact Eco-Food Group Chair, Jeanne McDowell
- Diversity Team.
This group seeks to make both the fellowship and the
greater Fond du Lac community welcoming to all by standing up
to discrimination based on identity, including sexual orientation,
racial or ethnic identity, or religious identity. The team's major
accomplishment to date has been leading our Congregation through the
process of becoming a Welcoming Congregation. The
Welcoming Congregation is a UUA Program through which
congregations educate themselves and their communities to increase
understanding and acceptance among people of different sexul
orientations. The goal is to become more inclusive of bisexual, gay,
lesbian, and/or transgender people. The team also invited several other
local congregations and the community to participate.
- The Green Sanctuary. Our Green Sanctuary
committee is beginning its work in earnest. This committee will lead us
in efforts to be environmentally responsible as a congregation and as
individuals as part of this Unitarian Universalist Association program.
The Green Sanctuary Program, was designed to give roots and wings to the vision that, together, we
can create a world in which all people make reverence, gratitude, and care for
the living Earth that is central to our lives. We will be hearing more from this committee soon. Feel free to talk to Jeanne or John McDowell if you have any questions.
See the calendar in News and Events for meeting dates.
